Welcome from the Vice President for Research

CWRU researchers are among the most distinguished in the world. We have 16 Nobel Laureates among current and former faculty and alumni, 4 members of the National Academies of Sciences, 7 members of the National Academy of Engineering, and 8 members of the Institute of Medicine. We also partner with artistic and cultural institutions on a broad range of projects that make important scholarly contributions in the humanities and social sciences.

Extraordinary research requires an outstanding infrastructure. Our Office of Research & Technology Management provides support to seek out grant funding, to facilitate industrial sponsorship, and to transfer university technologies to the marketplace. This is a place for people driven to make a difference, and our office exists to help them succeed.

SpartaCOI is now available for 2014 Annual Outside Financial Interests Certification

Sparta COI Disclosure System

It is time for all full-time faculty and non-faculty investigators to complete the annual CWRU Outside Financial Interests Certification Form. CWRU Conflict of Interests Policy requires disclosure at least annually and the deadline for completion of the 2014 form is April 1, 2015.

Community-Based Research Consult Service

The Case Center for Reducing Health Disparities is funded by the National Institutes of Health to offer a variety of services to faculty members, health care providers, student researchers, and community organizations. One of our many services include a Community-Based Research Consult Service to help researchers and organizations develop quality research.

The consult service has expertise in areas including, but not limited to: research project development, IRB application process, grants assistance and funding, survey development and refinement, needs assessment, data collection, program evaluation, best practices, focus group development, recruitment strategies, dissemination of findings, and Spanish Translation.

Simmons Foundation, Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation

The Simmons Foundation, Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation are pleased to announce the Faculty Scholars Competition, a national competition for grants to outstanding early-career scientists.

The three philanthropies will award a total of $148 million over the program’s first five years, awarding up to 70 grants every two and a half to three years. The awards are intended for basic researchers and physician scientists who have already demonstrated significant research accomplishments and show potential to make unique and important contributions to their fields.

Reminder: New NIH biosketch format effective May 25th, 2015

The new NIH Biosketch format will take effect for applications submitted on or after May 25, 2015. Key changes include:

  • Extending the biosketch page limit to 5 pages
  • Allowing PIs and researchers to include up to four references in their personal statement
  • Allowing researchers to describe up to five of their most important contributions to science
  • Allowing researchers to include a link that provides access to a full list of your published work

Additional points to consider:
  • Investigators need to update their personal profile on eRA Commons
  • Public access compliance need to be up to date
  • All non-CWRU, most especially international, collaborators must also be compliant if they are named as key personnel.

Research ShowCASE and Spring Intersections: Discovery, Collaboration & Community

The CWRU Office of Research and Technology Management and SOURCE (Support of Undergraduate Research and Creative Endeavors) are pleased to announce the opening of the Call for Presentations for Research ShowCASE 2015.

We invite you to participate with other CWRU faculty, staff and students by presenting your work at Research ShowCASE 2015. The event will provide an opportunity for you to display your research in a traditional scientific poster or other creative means. We encourage University Hospitals, Cleveland Clinic, MetroHealth Medical Center and the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center researchers to participate.

In addition to the opportunity to display and share your work, undergraduate and graduate students, professional students and postdoctoral scholars are encouraged to participate in the research competition, which will include having your presentation evaluated and feedback provided. Prizes will be awarded to winning entries.

In order to display your work at Research ShowCASE, you will need to submit an online abstract describing your research. If you are a student or post-doc, your faculty advisor will need to approve your submission.

New this year:

  • You will need to provide a brief description of your research in non-scientific terms
  • You will be given the opportunity to provide a video abstract of your work in addition to the written abstract
  • If you provide a 140-character title or description of your entry, we will tweet about your work
Abstract Submission Deadline: February 15, 2015 (for graduate students, post-docs, professional students, faculty and staff)

Undergraduate submissions will be accepted between February 16, 2015 and March 20, 2015.
