Suzanne Rivera named new VP for research

Provost W.A. "Bud" Baeslack III announced, on November 4th, the appointment of Suzanne M. Rivera as Case Western Reserve´s new vice president for research, effective this month. Rivera, the university´s associate vice president for research since January 2011, emerged as the top choice after an extensive process involving campuswide nominations of internal university candidates. Since coming to CWRU, Rivera has distinguished herself through a commitment to collaboration and a focus on systems and processes.

The National Academies

The National Academies has announced their 2015 Jefferson Science Fellows (JSF) competition. The Jefferson Science Fellows program, now in its 12th year, was established by the U.S. Secretary of State to engage the American academic science, technology, engineering and medical communities I the design and implementation of U.S. foreign policy.

Jefferson Science Fellows spend one year at the U.S. Department of State or the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) for an on-site assignment in Washinton, D.C. that may also involve extended stays at U.S. foreign embassies and/or missions. The fellowship is open to tenured, or similarly ranked, academic scientists, engineers and physicians from U.S. institutions of higher learning who are U.S. citizens.

The application deadline is January 12, 2015, and awardees will be notified in March. Up to fifteen Fellows are expected to be selected for the 2015 program year.

Loaner CWRU ChromeBooks Support Data Privacy when Travelling

When it comes to travelling internationally with computer devices containing yet-unpublished research data or other private information, the University Compliance Office and CWRU Information Security Office urge you to “travel clean.” Consider leaving at home devices containing research data or other sensitive information which may be vulnerable to loss, theft, or export-licensing-related considerations.

The University Compliance Office and CWRU Information Security Office have partnered to make clean ChromeBooks (laptops containing no hard drive) available for loan to individuals travelling abroad on CWRU business. The ChromeBooks are integrated with CWRU’s Google Apps services, and are available for loan from Kelvin Smith Library on a first-come, first-served basis. National Institutes of Health (NIH)

The National Institutes of Health, Department of Health and Human Services has announced the following new funding opportunity:

New Facilities and Administrative (F&A) Rate for Use in Proposals

Negotiations with the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) regarding the University’s F&A rates have concluded. DHHS has approved a (3) three year F&A rate of 58.5% for CWRU, which is a 1.5 percentage point change from our previous rate of 57%. This rate will be effective through June 2016.

The new F&A rate should be used when preparing proposal budgets for awards with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2013 or after.

Research Performance Progress Report Required for Non-SNAP Progress Reports Beginning October 17, 2014

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) currently requires use of the federal wide progress reporting format — known as the RPPR (Research Performance Progress Report) — to submit progress reports for Streamlined Non-competing Award Process (SNAP), fellowship, and multi-year funded awards. In April NIH opened the RPPR for use for all Type 5 Non-SNAP progress reports in anticipation of an October 2014 requirement for RPPR use.

Now, it’s official — all type 5 non-SNAP progress reports submitted on or after October 17, 2014 need to be submitted through the RPPR module of eRA Commons. This announcement is part of NIH’s ongoing transition to requiring the use of the federal government-wide RPPR format for all progress reporting.

NIH’s website on the RPPR provides information on the why, what, and when of the RPPR, with a handy table that lets you know for which types of grants the RPPR is now required, and for which it is still optional.
