Student Research - Responsibilities before Graduation
Before graduating students leave the university, it is important that the following research-related responsibilities are fulfilled:

- Any student-initiated institutional review board (IRB) protocol is required either to be turned over to the responsible investigator or closed out with the IRB.Keep in mind that in order to close a protocol, data must be deidentified. If identifiable data will be retained, the protocol must remain open and the faculty investigator is responsible for keeping the data and maintaining the security measures of it, as outlined in the approved IRB protocol.
- For student-related research that has been federally funded, faculty advisors and responsible/principal investigators must keep original data, and students may take copies, unless a formal written agreement is made that ensures immediate and complete access to the original data.
- Upon terminating the IRB protocol, the student must provide copies of the completed informed consent documents and any data collection instruments to the responsible investigator.
CWRU researchers who receive requests for information that invoke the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) should contact the Office of General Counsel. This should be done immediately so the extremely short deadlines under FOIA can be met. General Counsel can work with the faculty member to take steps to protect proprietary or confidential information from grants and protocols prior to the release of the requested information. Individual researchers should not release information without first consulting with the CWRU Office of General Counsel.

Limited Submission Reminder: Hartwell Foundation - Individual Biomedical Research Awards
Key Deadlines: June 1, 2015 (CWRU internal letter of intent); June 30, 2015 (CWRU internal application); September 15, 2015 (Sponsor's submission deadline).
Because Case Western Reserve University earned an at-large bid in The Hartwell Foundation's Individual Biomedical Research Awards program, CWRU is eligible to nominate two faculty members for proposal submission this year. Since 2011, five CWRU faculty members have been selected for Hartwell awards.
The foundation funds 12 Hartwell Investigators annually for their innovative, early-stage, cutting-edge biomedical research that has the potential to benefit children in the USA. These awards provide funding to individual researchers in the U.S. for three years, at $100,000 direct cost per year.
Number of Applications Allowed: Two faculty members.

Department of Health and Human Services – Administration for Children & Families
This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) solicits applications for the Competitive Abstinence Education (CAE) program. The purpose of the CAE program is to provide funding for additional tools to address the rates of teen pregnancy among adolescent youth who are at greatest risk of sexually transmitted infections and most likely to bear children out of wedlock. Program plans will focus on the social, psychological, and health gains to be realized by delaying initiation of sexual activity and engaging in healthy relationships. Grantees under this program will be expected to develop a targeted and medically accurate approach to reducing teen pregnancies through abstinence education.
