Imagination Institute

Supported by a grant from the John Templeton Foundation, the Imagination Institute a non-profit organization based in Pennsylvania dedicated to advancing the understanding of and research on imagination, has established under its initiative, Advancing the Science of Imagination: Toward an “Imagination Quotient,” a grants competition targeted to psychologists, neuroscientists, and educators who conduct research on theory of mind, mental imagery, mental simulation, perspective taking, prospective thought, daydreaming, mind wandering, counterfactual thinking, creativity, memory, curiosity, child development, aging, social cognition, and related fields, to support projects that seek to test and validate a proposed measure and develop an intervention for imagination/perspective. This initiative encourages such researchers to collaborate with individuals in corporate, military, school, health, university, governmental, and artistic settings to demonstrate that the proposed measure and interventions work in such a setting. Proposals from around the world will be welcomed.

In 2015, up to fifteen (15), two-year grants in the range of $150,000 to $200,000 will be awarded to scholars from around the world. The awards are intended to generate new scientific information in order to further clarify the construct of imagination and its measurement for the purpose of advancing an understanding of the human mind and its role in the optimization of human potential and flourishing. The award recipients will be brought together for a retreat at the conclusion of the program in the summer of 2017 in order to compare the results of their projects and to discuss longer-term efforts at generating an “Imagination Quotient”.

Department of Health and Human Services – Administration for Children and Families

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) solicits applications for demonstration projects that support programs that have the capacity and proven record of accomplishment in providing a broad range of marriage and relationship skills training. To address the multiple barriers faced by individuals, couples, partners, and families, programs will provide healthy marriage and relationship skills designed to change behaviors of individuals and move families towards economic self-sufficiency.

Limited Submission Reminder: Hartwell Foundation - Individual Biomedical Research Awards

Key Deadlines: June 1, 2015 (CWRU internal letter of intent); June 30, 2015 (CWRU internal application); September 15, 2015 (Sponsor's submission deadline).

Because Case Western Reserve University earned an at-large bid in The Hartwell Foundation's Individual Biomedical Research Awards program, CWRU is eligible to nominate two faculty members for proposal submission this year. Since 2011, five CWRU faculty members have been selected for Hartwell awards.

The foundation funds 12 Hartwell Investigators annually for their innovative, early-stage, cutting-edge biomedical research that has the potential to benefit children in the USA. These awards provide funding to individual researchers in the U.S. for three years, at $100,000 direct cost per year.

Student Research - Responsibilities before Graduation

Before graduating students leave the university, it is important that the following research-related responsibilities are fulfilled:

  • Any student-initiated institutional review board (IRB) protocol is required either to be turned over to the responsible investigator or closed out with the IRB.Keep in mind that in order to close a protocol, data must be deidentified. If identifiable data will be retained, the protocol must remain open and the faculty investigator is responsible for keeping the data and maintaining the security measures of it, as outlined in the approved IRB protocol.

  • For student-related research that has been federally funded, faculty advisors and responsible/principal investigators must keep original data, and students may take copies, unless a formal written agreement is made that ensures immediate and complete access to the original data.

  • Upon terminating the IRB protocol, the student must provide copies of the completed informed consent documents and any data collection instruments to the responsible investigator.
