CWRU researchers are among the most distinguished in the world. We also partner with artistic and cultural institutions on a broad range of projects that make important scholarly contributions in the humanities and social sciences.

Burroughs Wellcome Fund - Career Awards for Medical Scientists

The Career Awards for Medical Scientists (CAMS) is a highly competitive program that provides $700,000 awards over five years for physician-scientists, who are committed to an academic career, to bridge advanced postdoctoral/fellowship training and the early years of faculty service.

Proposals must be in the area of basic biomedical, disease-oriented, or translational research. Proposals in health services research or involving large-scale clinical trials are not eligible. The previously funded individuals (or researchers) are listed in the Grant Recipients section of this program.

The competition will employ a two-stage process. Preproposals will be reviewed and approximately 80-90 full proposal invitations will be sent by October 1, 2015.

All applicants will be required to complete a web-based questionnaire assessing their eligibility to apply for this award. If eligibility criteria are met, applicants will be automatically directed to the web-based pre-proposal form.

It is strongly recommended that potential applicants review the Request for Proposals prior to accessing the eligibility questionnaire.

Imagination Institute

Supported by a grant from the John Templeton Foundation, the Imagination Institute a non-profit organization based in Pennsylvania dedicated to advancing the understanding of and research on imagination, has established under its initiative, Advancing the Science of Imagination: Toward an “Imagination Quotient,” a grants competition targeted to psychologists, neuroscientists, and educators who conduct research on theory of mind, mental imagery, mental simulation, perspective taking, prospective thought, daydreaming, mind wandering, counterfactual thinking, creativity, memory, curiosity, child development, aging, social cognition, and related fields, to support projects that seek to test and validate a proposed measure and develop an intervention for imagination/perspective. This initiative encourages such researchers to collaborate with individuals in corporate, military, school, health, university, governmental, and artistic settings to demonstrate that the proposed measure and interventions work in such a setting. Proposals from around the world will be welcomed.

In 2015, up to fifteen (15), two-year grants in the range of $150,000 to $200,000 will be awarded to scholars from around the world. The awards are intended to generate new scientific information in order to further clarify the construct of imagination and its measurement for the purpose of advancing an understanding of the human mind and its role in the optimization of human potential and flourishing. The award recipients will be brought together for a retreat at the conclusion of the program in the summer of 2017 in order to compare the results of their projects and to discuss longer-term efforts at generating an “Imagination Quotient”.

NEW Limited Submission: NSF: Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Program (S-STEM)

Key Deadlines: July 31, 2015, 5:00pm (CWRU Internal Submission Deadline), September 22, 2015, 5:00pm EST (agency submission deadline).

This program makes grants to institutions of higher education to support scholarships for academically talented students demonstrating financial need, enabling them to enter the STEM workforce or STEM graduate school following completion of an associate, baccalaureate, or graduate-level degree in science, technology, engineering or mathematics disciplines. Grantee institutions are responsible for selecting scholarship recipients, reporting demographic information about student scholars, and managing the S-STEM project at the institution.

S-STEM scholarship recipients will be selected by the awardee institution, but must be enrolled full time in a program leading to an associate, baccalaureate, or graduate degree in one of the following disciplines for each term for which a student receives a scholarship:

  • biological sciences (except medicine and other clinical fields);
  • physical sciences, including physics, chemistry, astronomy, and materials science;
  • mathematical sciences;
  • computer and information sciences;
  • geosciences;
  • engineering;
  • technology areas associated with the preceding fields (for example, biotechnology, chemical technology, engineering technology, information technology, etc.)


The S-STEM program emphasizes the importance of recruiting students to STEM disciplines, mentoring and supporting students through degree completion, and partnering with employers to facilitate student career placement in the STEM workforce. Participating institutions are expected to support the goals of the S-STEM program including the following: improved educational opportunities for students; increased retention of students to degree achievement; improved student support programs at institutions of higher education; and increased numbers of well-educated and skilled employees in technical areas of national need.

It is expected that scholarship recipients will achieve at least one of the following by the end of the scholarship award period: receive an associate, baccalaureate, or graduate degree in one of the S-STEM disciplines; transfer from an associate degree program to a baccalaureate degree program or from an undergraduate program to a graduate program in one of the S-STEM disciplines; and successfully pass one or more of an institution's self-identified attrition points.

NEW Limited Submission: Simons Foundation: Investigators in the Mathematical Modeling of Living Systems

Key Deadlines: September 3, 2015, 5:00pm (CWRU Letter of Intent), October 28, 2015, 12:00pm EST (external application).

The Simons Foundation invites nominations for Simons Investigators in the Mathematical Modeling of Living Systems (MMLS). These Investigators are outstanding scientists, often with mathematics or theoretical physics backgrounds, who are now engaged in mathematical model- based research in the life sciences and to whom the Simons Foundation is dedicated to providing long-term support for their work.

Rationale and scope: New approaches in mathematically based modeling are making increasingly important contributions to the life sciences. The MMLS program aims to support such approaches and foster a scientific culture of theory-experiment collaboration similar to that prevailing in the physical sciences. To encourage young researchers to pursue this endeavor, the MMLS program will provide a long-term, stable base of support, enabling a focus on model-based approaches to important issues in the life sciences.

A broad spectrum of research areas within the life sciences will be considered, ranging from cellular-level issues of organization, regulation, signaling, and morphogenic dynamics to the properties of organisms and ecology, as well as neuroscience and evolution; however, preference will be given to areas in which modeling approaches are less established and, for this reason, bioinformatics- and genomics-related proposals fall outside the scope of the program. In all cases, preference will be given to work that relates closely to experiment, developing mathematical models that can explain data, suggest new classes of experiments, and introduce important new concepts.

Terms of Awards: An Investigator will receive research support in an amount initially set at $100,000 per year. An additional $10,000 per year will be provided to the Investigator's department. The award is administered through the institution at which the Investigator is appointed, and this institution will receive an additional 20 percent per year in indirect costs on the Investigator and departmental funds.

Community-Based Research Consult Service

The Case Center for Reducing Health Disparities is funded by the National Institutes of Health to offer a variety of services to faculty members, health care providers, student researchers, and community organizations. One of our many services include a Community-Based Research Consult Service to help researchers and organizations develop quality research.

The consult service has expertise in areas including, but not limited to: research project development, IRB application process, grants assistance and funding, survey development and refinement, needs assessment, data collection, program evaluation, best practices, focus group development, recruitment strategies, dissemination of findings, and Spanish Translation.
