PEER Training Program Seeks Faculty Partners
Faculty partner recruitment for the third cohort of the Partners in Education, Evaluation and Research (PEER) training program begins May 1. The program was developed jointly by the CWRU Prevention Research Center for Healthy Neighborhoods (PRCHN) and the Clinical Translational Science Collaborative (CTSC).
The 15-month part-time training program is designed to increase research capacity in community organizations and strengthen community/academic partnerships in order to more effectively facilitate translational research. The program enrolls 4-6 qualified applicants (Fellows) from local health-related organizations to work directly with a university faculty partner to conduct research relevant to health issues.
An important component of this program is linking the community organizations to faculty members who are interested in conducting a partnered research project. This partnership is structured to add value and build upon the faculty member’s current responsibilities and research. Faculty partners are expected to have strong and/or promising research backgrounds, especially with regards to the collecting, management, and analysis of quantitative data. Faculty partners receive a small stipend for participating.

Limited Submission Reminder: Hartwell Foundation - Individual Biomedical Research Awards
Key Deadlines: June 1, 2015 (CWRU internal letter of intent); June 30, 2015 (CWRU internal application); September 15, 2015 (Sponsor's submission deadline).
Because Case Western Reserve University earned an at-large bid in The Hartwell Foundation's Individual Biomedical Research Awards program, CWRU is eligible to nominate two faculty members for proposal submission this year. Since 2011, five CWRU faculty members have been selected for Hartwell awards.
The foundation funds 12 Hartwell Investigators annually for their innovative, early-stage, cutting-edge biomedical research that has the potential to benefit children in the USA. These awards provide funding to individual researchers in the U.S. for three years, at $100,000 direct cost per year.

National Science Foundation (NSF) & American Institute of Biological Sciences (AIBS)
The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) and the American Institute of Biological Sciences (AIBS) have launched the Beyond the Box National Digitization Innovation Competition. The initiative will award $1 million to the individual or team who develops a novel way to accurately and efficiently capture digital images of insect specimens and their associated data from a standard museum drawer of insects.
The Beyond the Box Digitization Challenge has been designed to stimulate individuals or teams to solve a problem that is hindering scientific research and innovation - the inability to quickly and accurately digitize specimens and associated data in a standard tray of insects in a natural history museum. Solving this problem will help advance research as well as contribute to improved public health, environmental management, and agriculture by providing scientists, farmers, health care providers, and citizen scientists with access to our nation's insect collections. Moreover, the solution to this problem will almost certainly find additional applications in scientific and commercial settings.
The winning entry will receive up to $1 million for the development of a hardware and software system that automates digitization of pinned insect specimens, without damaging the specimens--one of the most challenging biocollections digitization tasks.

Department of Health and Human Services – Administration for Children & Families
This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) solicits applications for the Competitive Abstinence Education (CAE) program. The purpose of the CAE program is to provide funding for additional tools to address the rates of teen pregnancy among adolescent youth who are at greatest risk of sexually transmitted infections and most likely to bear children out of wedlock. Program plans will focus on the social, psychological, and health gains to be realized by delaying initiation of sexual activity and engaging in healthy relationships. Grantees under this program will be expected to develop a targeted and medically accurate approach to reducing teen pregnancies through abstinence education.
