CWRU researchers are among the most distinguished in the world. We have 16 Nobel Laureates among current and former faculty and alumni, 4 members of the National Academies of Sciences, 7 members of the National Academy of Engineering, and 8 members of the Institute of Medicine. We also partner with artistic and cultural institutions on a broad range of projects that make important scholarly contributions in the humanities and social sciences.

SpartaCOI is now available for 2014 Annual Outside Financial Interests Certification

Sparta COI Disclosure System

It is time for all full-time faculty and non-faculty investigators to complete the annual CWRU Outside Financial Interests Certification Form. CWRU Conflict of Interests Policy requires disclosure at least annually and the deadline for completion of the 2014 form is April 1, 2015.

2014 COI Disclosure Status Reflected in Sparta System

The deadline for submission of CWRU 2014 Outside Interests Disclosure forms was April 1, 2015. The Sparta System reflects those who have submitted their 2014 disclosure to the Conflict of Interests (COI) Office.

Please be aware, however, that if individuals listed as key personnel on proposals in Sparta have not completed the 2014 Outside Interests Disclosure process, those individuals will need to do so before proposals can continue in the approval workflow. It is important to allow enough time to address any instances of overdue disclosures when submitting a proposal.

Limited Submission Reminder: Hartwell Foundation - Individual Biomedical Research Awards

Key Deadlines: June 1, 2015 (CWRU internal letter of intent); June 30, 2015 (CWRU internal application); September 15, 2015 (Sponsor's submission deadline).

Because Case Western Reserve University earned an at-large bid in The Hartwell Foundation's Individual Biomedical Research Awards program, CWRU is eligible to nominate two faculty members for proposal submission this year. Since 2011, five CWRU faculty members have been selected for Hartwell awards.

The foundation funds 12 Hartwell Investigators annually for their innovative, early-stage, cutting-edge biomedical research that has the potential to benefit children in the USA. These awards provide funding to individual researchers in the U.S. for three years, at $100,000 direct cost per year.

Good Clinical Practice (GCP) Certification

8:00 – 10:00 AM- GCP and PI Responsibilities:
This session will include discussions of the relationships between laws, regulations, guidelines, and standard operating procedures. Key obligations of sponsors, monitors and investigators and their inter-relationships will be described. Investigators completing the program will receive a GCP certificate that can be provided to sponsors.

10:15 - 11:30 AM- Ethical Considerations, Informed Consent and Financial Disclosure:
This session will include a brief historical perspective of ethical considerations in conducting clinical research. The elements and process for obtaining informed consent from potential study participants will be discussed and well as financial disclosure.

Retirement Research Foundation

The Retirement Research Foundation is accepting proposals from nonprofit organizations for local and national projects designed to improve the quality of life for older Americans.

Grants will be awarded in support of projects that provide direct services, advocacy, and education and training for professionals working with elders, as well as for research that investigates causes of and solutions to significant challenges faced by older adults.

To be eligible for funding, projects must have a local focus in one of the following seven states: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Missouri, Wisconsin, and Florida. However, advocacy, training, and research projects of national relevance will be considered from organizations located anywhere in the United States.

In 2015, the foundation will consider proposals on May 1 and August 3. Applicants who want to discuss a project before submitting a full proposal should send a brief Letter of Inquiry to the foundation at least three weeks prior to one of those deadlines.

NIH Postpones New Biosketch Format Requirement until May 25, 2015

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) recently announced that a new biosketch format will be required for all applications submitted for FY2016 funding, and will be required beginning May 25, 2015. Originally, the requirement was to go into effect beginning January 25, 2015, but in response to input from the research community, the mandatory change in format was postponed.

The NIH has been piloting a planned modification of the biosketch since June 2012. The new format increases the page limit from 4 to 5 pages and increases the number of peer-reviewed publications from 15 to 20. The new format allows investigators to include a link to a complete listing of their publications in SciENcv or My Bibliography.
