It is time for all full-time faculty and non-faculty investigators to complete the annual CWRU Outside Financial Interests Certification Form. CWRU Conflict of Interests Policy requires disclosure at least annually and the deadline for completion of the 2014 form is April 1, 2015.

Imagination Institute

Supported by a grant from the John Templeton Foundation, the Imagination Institute a non-profit organization based in Pennsylvania dedicated to advancing the understanding of and research on imagination, has established under its initiative, Advancing the Science of Imagination: Toward an “Imagination Quotient,” a grants competition targeted to psychologists, neuroscientists, and educators who conduct research on theory of mind, mental imagery, mental simulation, perspective taking, prospective thought, daydreaming, mind wandering, counterfactual thinking, creativity, memory, curiosity, child development, aging, social cognition, and related fields, to support projects that seek to test and validate a proposed measure and develop an intervention for imagination/perspective. This initiative encourages such researchers to collaborate with individuals in corporate, military, school, health, university, governmental, and artistic settings to demonstrate that the proposed measure and interventions work in such a setting. Proposals from around the world will be welcomed.

In 2015, up to fifteen (15), two-year grants in the range of $150,000 to $200,000 will be awarded to scholars from around the world. The awards are intended to generate new scientific information in order to further clarify the construct of imagination and its measurement for the purpose of advancing an understanding of the human mind and its role in the optimization of human potential and flourishing. The award recipients will be brought together for a retreat at the conclusion of the program in the summer of 2017 in order to compare the results of their projects and to discuss longer-term efforts at generating an “Imagination Quotient”.

NIH Postpones New Biosketch Format Requirement until May 25, 2015

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) recently announced that a new biosketch format will be required for all applications submitted for FY2016 funding, and will be required beginning May 25, 2015. Originally, the requirement was to go into effect beginning January 25, 2015, but in response to input from the research community, the mandatory change in format was postponed.

The NIH has been piloting a planned modification of the biosketch since June 2012. The new format increases the page limit from 4 to 5 pages and increases the number of peer-reviewed publications from 15 to 20. The new format allows investigators to include a link to a complete listing of their publications in SciENcv or My Bibliography.

NEW Limited Submission: CDC: Surveillance of Congenital Heart Defects Across the Lifespan

Key Deadlines: April 27, 2015, 5:00pm EST (CWRU internal letter of intent), June 1, 2015, 11:59pm EST (Sponsor's submission deadline).

This new, competitive FOA will expand the National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities' programs conducting birth defects surveillance with a focus on congenital heart defects (CHDs) among individuals of all ages. The National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (NCBDDD), Division of Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (DBDDD) seeks to fund collaborative projects to:

1) Category A: Build on existing infrastructure for population-based CHDs surveillance to (i) link additional years of surveillance data for both adolescents and adults identified having a CHD, (ii) identify factors associated with optimal healthcare and improved outcomes, (iii) evaluate factors that impede appropriate transition from pediatric to adult care, (iv) expand surveillance activities to include the lifespan, if possible, and (v) develop pilot projects to translate public health best practices into action.

2) Category B: Develop and implement innovative approaches for conducting population-based surveillance of CHDs in adolescents and adults, and if possible, across the lifespan, by linking existing data sources. Surveillance data will be used for descriptive epidemiology, to identify comorbidities, and examine healthcare utilization and referral to timely and appropriate services.

Number of Applications Allowed: One application per organization.

Terms of Awards: The awards will be between $250,000 and $500,000.

Sparta Funding Proposals for Continuations

We are currently aware of an issue that has occurred in a small number of Continuations being created off of imported eURFs. These continuations are being generated without proposed budgets preventing users from updating the financial information needed for the continuation.

The support team is working with the vendor to find a solution. If you need to create a continuation, please allow as much time as possible in case this situation occurs.

We hope to have this fixed as soon as possible.
