CWRU researchers are among the most distinguished in the world. We have 16 Nobel Laureates among current and former faculty and alumni, 4 members of the National Academies of Sciences, 7 members of the National Academy of Engineering, and 8 members of the Institute of Medicine. We also partner with artistic and cultural institutions on a broad range of projects that make important scholarly contributions in the humanities and social sciences.

Our Office of Research & Technology Management provides support to seek out grant funding, to facilitate industrial sponsorship, and to transfer university technologies to the marketplace. SpartaCOI is now available for 2014 Annual Outside Financial Interests Certification

Sparta COI Disclosure System

It is time for all full-time faculty and non-faculty investigators to complete the annual CWRU Outside Financial Interests Certification Form. CWRU Conflict of Interests Policy requires disclosure at least annually and the deadline for completion of the 2014 form is April 1, 2015.

National Multiple Sclerosis Society

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society is now accepting pre-applications for the Career Transition Fellowship. This opportunity targets current postdoctoral trainees who demonstrate both commitment and exceptional potential to conduct MS-related research. The award provides approximately $550,000 over five years to support a two-year period of advanced postdoctoral training in MS research and the first three years of research support in a new faculty appointment.

Deadline: Preliminary application due April 15, 2015, Full application due August 12, 2015

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society is looking to fund high-risk pilot grants to quickly test novel ideas. Funding is provided for one year to test innovative, cutting-edge ideas or untested methods, and to gather sufficient preliminary data to apply for longer-term funding. Applications for studies related to multiple sclerosis that may serve to advance the mission of stopping MS progression, restoring function and improving quality of life, and preventing MS are welcomed. The Society supports fundamental as well as applied studies, non-clinical or clinical in nature, including projects in patient management, care and rehabilitation.

Deadline: New applications reviewed on a quarterly basis, with 2015 deadlines of January 7, April 1, July 1, October 7.

The Data Incubator

The Data Incubator is offering an intensive 7 week fellowship that prepares masters, PhDs, and postdocs in STEM + social science fields seeking industry careers as data scientists. The program is free for fellows and supported by sponsorships from dozens of employers across multiple industries. There will be both an in-person (in NYC, DC, SF) and online section of the fellowship. There is a common application for both the online and in-person sections.

Dates: All sections will be from June 1, 2015 to July 17, 2015

Diversity in Research explores the scientific, ethical, and legal bases for the inclusion of diverse participants in research and the recruitment and hiring of diverse research staff. Potential barriers to diversity in the research context are discussed.

This workshop meets the requirements of the CWRU Office of Inclusion, Diversity, and Equal Opportunity (OIDEO) for participation on CWRU search committees.

New Outside Interests Disclosure Form

Case Western Reserve University is committed to ensuring its faculty an open and productive environment in which to conduct teaching and research. The institution's concern with conflict of interests reflects the ever-increasing complexity of our society, our various relations with each other and with outside institutions, along with the heightened national and governmental sensitivity to such matters.

University policy requires that all faculty and other researchers who contribute to scientific development disclose their outside interests at least annually. The 2014 Outside Interests disclosure process will begin the first week of February. The Office of Research Administration has transitioned to Click Sparta to administer the 2014 process. Sparta has had a positive impact on streamlining the pre-award system and by using specialized Sparta Conflict of Interests (COI) software we have created a much more user friendly COI system. Sparta COI will have the look and feel of Sparta which will ease transition to the new software.

Pertinent information that had been part of the Spiderweb disclosure process will not prepopulate the Sparta COI disclosure form, but any data disclosed in Sparta COI will remain to be updated or changed as the need arises.

A number of information sessions have been organized in February and March, and we hope you can join the Office of Research Administration COI staff for an opportunity to learn about the new Sparta COI software for the annual disclosure process. Attendees can stop in for a quick tutorial of the new system, or you can complete your disclosure during the session with assistance from the COI staff.

 
Doris Duke Charitable Foundation – Building Demand for the Arts

The Doris Duke Building Demand for the Arts grants support organizations and artists in joint efforts to develop audience demand for jazz, theatre and/or contemporary dance. While many programs focus on the supply side of the supply/demand equation, this program is predicated on the belief that artists and organizations can work together in imaginative ways to create and pilot methods of reaching the public and developing interest in and access to the performing arts. This program encourages creative thinking about how to increase this demand and to engage communities in new ways—which may include but are not necessarily limited to the traditional artist-audience dynamic.

The program is divided into two distinct grant initiatives: Exploration Grants, supporting hosted visits for artists of at least 30 days over a period of up to 15 months during which artists and organizations are to begin to imagine and plan ways to build demand; and Implementation Grants, supporting artists hosted by organizations for at least 90 days over a period of up to three years. Both Exploration and Implementation grants will be offered in 2015 but organizations may only apply for one of the grant types. A total of 40 Implementation grants will be awarded in the next two rounds.
