CWRU researchers are among the most distinguished in the world. We also partner with artistic and cultural institutions on a broad range of projects that make important scholarly contributions in the humanities and social sciences.

Our Office of Research & Technology Management provides support to seek out grant funding, to facilitate industrial sponsorship, and to transfer university technologies to the marketplace. It is time for all full-time faculty and non-faculty investigators to complete the annual CWRU Outside Financial Interests Certification Form. CWRU Conflict of Interests Policy requires disclosure at least annually and the deadline for completion of the 2014 form is April 1, 2015.

Health Resources and Services Administration – Rural Health Program

Funding Opportunity Number: HRSA-15-072
The purpose of the Rural Health Value Program is to inform rural health care providers and stakeholders such as HHS, Congress, states, and for-profit and nonprofit entities that set policies impacting rural health care providers about the impacts of changes in the health care delivery system, and to provide technical assistance to rural providers in identifying potential new approaches to health care delivery in their communities. The Office of Rural Health Policy (ORHP) funds community health organizations to test innovative approaches to improving the delivery of care in their communities. Projects focus on a wide range of activities, including direct health care delivery, formation of networks to gain economies of scale and shared knowledge, implementation of quality of improvement strategies, and expansion of health care service delivery via telehealth. Evaluation of these awards documents outcomes and leads to the development of evidence-based practices that may be replicated in other communities. These best practices are shared with the broader rural health community primarily via the Rural Community Health Gateway. ORHP also funds technical assistance providers to work with grantees to implement best practices in their projects. There are numerous opportunities to learn from and highlight the innovations of these grantees, and to share information with the technical assistance providers who support them.

NEW Limited Submission: NSF - Research Traineeship (NRT)

Key Deadlines: March 9, 2015, 5:00pm (CWRU Internal Submission Deadline), May 6, 2015, 5:00pm EST (Agency Submission Deadline).

The NSF Research Traineeship (NRT) program is designed to encourage the development and implementation of bold, new, potentially transformative, and scalable models for STEM graduate education training. The NRT program seeks proposals that ensure that graduate students in research-based master’s and doctoral degree programs develop the skills, knowledge, and competencies needed to pursue a range of STEM careers.

The NRT program includes two tracks: the Traineeship Track and the Innovations in Graduate Education (IGE) Track. The Traineeship Track is dedicated to effective training of STEM graduate students in high priority interdisciplinary research areas, through the use of a comprehensive traineeship model that is innovative, evidence-based, aligned with changing workforce and research needs, and scalable. For this solicitation the Traineeship Track has one priority interdisciplinary research theme - Data-Enabled Science and Engineering (DESE); proposals are encouraged also on any non-DESE interdisciplinary research theme that is a national priority. The IGE Track is dedicated solely to piloting, testing, and evaluating novel, innovative, and potentially transformative approaches to graduate education, both disciplinary and interdisciplinary, to generate the knowledge required for their customization, implementation, and broader adoption. Whereas the Traineeship Track promotes building on the current knowledge base to more effectively train STEM graduate students, the IGE Track supports test-bed projects with high potential to enrich, improve, and extend the knowledge base with attention to transferability and innovation. For both tracks, strategic collaborations with the private sector, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), government agencies, national laboratories, field stations, teaching and learning centers, museums, and academic partners are encouraged.

Social Justice Institute (SJI)

TheSocial Justice Institute is making funds available for small grants of $2,500 to $10,000 to tenured or tenure-track faculty members or other faculty who can demonstrate long-term commitment to social justice at Case Western Reserve University. The funds will support research related to social justice. Up to four awards are expected, subject to the number and quality of applications. The Institute is not obligated to give awards in any given year.

The application deadline is Tuesday, March 17, 2015.

NEW Limited Submission: Dana Foundation: David Mahoney Neuroimaging Program

Key Deadlines: March 6, 2015, 5:00pm (CWRU Internal Submission Deadline), April 7, 2015, 3:00pm EST (Sponsor’s Submission deadline).

The Dana Foundation's neuroimaging research program focuses on improving human brain and brain-immune functioning to promote health, and prevent and treat disease. Funds support pilot-testing by investigators, who are early in their research careers, to enable them to pursue promising, high-risk, and innovative ideas that have a direct clinical application. The pilot data are anticipated to help increase competitiveness for seeking larger-scale support from other funders.

This program, like all other Dana-supported research, is designed to improve human health. Investigations need to be applicable to human brain or brain-immune functioning or malfunctioning. To be considered for funding, submitted proposals should focus on imaging in patients or patient tissues, and healthy volunteers.

NIH Postpones New Biosketch Format Requirement until May 25, 2015

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) recently announced that a new biosketch format will be required for all applications submitted for FY2016 funding, and will be required beginning May 25, 2015. Originally, the requirement was to go into effect beginning January 25, 2015, but in response to input from the research community, the mandatory change in format was postponed.

The NIH has been piloting a planned modification of the biosketch since June 2012. The new format increases the page limit from 4 to 5 pages and increases the number of peer-reviewed publications from 15 to 20. The new format allows investigators to include a link to a complete listing of their publications in SciENcv or My Bibliography.
