It is time for all full-time faculty and non-faculty investigators to complete the annual CWRU Outside Financial Interests Certification Form. CWRU Conflict of Interests Policy requires disclosure at least annually and the deadline for completion of the 2014 form is April 1, 2015.

Remember to Travel Clean when Going Abroad this Summer

Many faculty, staff, and students will be traveling abroad over the summer. When it comes to traveling internationally with research data or materials, the CWRU community is urged to “travel clean”. That is, leave behind in the U.S. any research data, items, or technology which may be subject to laws requiring an export license or which may be vulnerable to loss, theft, or other privacy-related considerations. Take only those data that have been published or are in the public domain. Particularly consider whether there is research data on your laptop and other electronic devices before taking them overseas.

Notice of Potential Delays to NIH Issuing Awards in May 2015

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has issued a notice indicating that NIH's ability to issue competing and noncompeting awards may be delayed for two weeks from May 19, 2015 until June 3, 2015. During this time, a series of software upgrades will be made to NIH accounting and business systems that have widereaching impacts across the NIH. These also connect to NIH grantmaking systems, and while every effort will be made to minimize the expected downtime, it may take up to two weeks to complete all the work.

No new or revised Notices of Award will be issued during this time. Submission and review of new applications through Grants.gov is not expected to be impacted.

Hartwell Postdoctoral Fellowship Nominations Due by May 15

Case Western Reserve University will receive a Hartwell Fellowship to fund one postdoctoral candidate of their choice who exemplifies the values of the Foundation. Each Hartwell Fellowship will provide support for two years at $50,000 direct cost for two years. Each Fellowship must be used to fund one postdoctoral candidate of the institution’s choice, selected from areas of biomedical science, in appropriate areas of basic and applied life sciences related to human health that are consistent with the values of The Hartwell Foundation, including engineering focused on biomedical applications. Proposals must reflect relevance in terms of potential benefits to children. The Foundation will only consider proposals in biomedical research. The Foundation will not consider for example, research in public health, epidemiology, social science, psychology, ecology, environmental impacts, anthropology, or botany. It is the intent of The Hartwell Foundation that the Fellowship will support scientists and biomedical engineers who have completed requirements for a doctoral degree and are still in the early stages of career development. The Fellowship must be used to pursue further specialized research training, not to extend or complete clinical training. The Fellowship will be funded in July.

The following rules apply to the Hartwell Fellowship:

  • Hartwell Fellows must be citizens of the United States
  • Fellows must commence their postdoctoral training no later than November 1, or the Fellowship award to the Institution may be rescinded
  • Funds may be used for salary, health insurance, or travel related to a scientific meeting, but not for the purchase of supplies or equipment or other fringe benefits
  • No part of the Fellowship may cover institutional overhead or other indirect costs, nor should the recipient or the sponsoring research laboratory be obligated or penalized to pay by substitution such indirect costs by any other means
  • At the conclusion of funding, the Hartwell Fellow should submit a summary of the impact that the award had on their career goals
  • If appreciable funds remain following a resignation of the Hartwell Fellow, the sponsoring institution must designate a timely replacement within Foundation guidelines; no adjustment to residual funds will be provided by The Hartwell Foundation
Start and End Dates
Postdoctoral study will commence upon receipt of funds but in no case later than November 1, 2015. The active period of the Fellowship is intended to be two years from commencement of training, unless the end date is extended by virtue of carryover of funds. At the conclusion of funding, the Hartwell Fellow will submit to the Foundation a summary of the impact that the award had on their career goals.

Nominations must be received by May 12, 2015 and include cv’s of the proposed postdoctoral fellow, a letter and cv of the sponsoring mentoring faculty member, a brief description of the biomedical research project in which the Fellow will be engaged and its relevance to the values of The Hartwell Foundation. The letter of request should also outline that the proposed Fellowships consistent with the rules noted above. The applications should be sent to DeputyProvost@case.edu no later than May 15, 2015.

 
Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Simmons Foundation

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Simmons Foundation have partnered to create a new program, the 2016 Faculty Scholar Program, designed to support early-career scientists. The Faculty Scholars competition is open to basic researchers and physician scientists at more than 220 eligible institutions, including Case Western Reserve. The competition seeks scholars who will apply molecular, genetic, computational and theoretical approaches to fundamental problems in diverse areas of biology.

Eligibility Criteria
• PhD and/or MD (or the equivalent).
• Tenured or tenure-track position as an assistant professor or higher academic rank at an eligible U.S. institution, or, if at an eligible institution that has no tenure track, an appointment that reflects a significant institutional commitment. Federal government employees are not eligible.
• More than 4, but no more than 10, years of post-training, professional experience. To meet this requirement, the applicant’s post-training, professional experience must have begun no earlier than June 1, 2005, and no later than July 1, 2011.
• Principal investigator or Co-Principal investigator on at least one active, nationally competitive grant with an initial term of two or more years at some point from April 1, 2013 through July 1, 2015. Career development grants qualify. Multi-investigator grants may qualify.

Important Conditions
• Up to 70 awardees will receive non-renewable grants ranging from $100k to $400k per year over 5 years ($500k - $2M per award).
• Faculty Scholars are required to devote at least 50% of their total effort to the direct conduct of research.
• Scholars conducting research at the interface of the biological and physical sciences are encouraged to apply.
• Scholars studying biological questions emerging from and applicable to global human health problems, including malaria, tuberculosis, HIV, and other diseases that disproportionately affect individuals living in low resource settings are encouraged to apply
. • Women and minorities under-represented in the biomedical and biological sciences are strongly encouraged to apply.
