Hartwell Foundation: Individual Biomedical Research Awards

Key Deadlines: March 24, 2017 (CWRU internal letter of intent), April 21, 2017 (CWRU internal submission deadline); September 15, 2017 (ANTICIPATED Sponsor submission deadline).

Since 2011, five CWRU faculty members have been selected for Hartwell Individual Biomedical Research awards.

The foundation funds 12 Hartwell Investigators annually for their innovative, early-stage, cutting-edge biomedical research that has the potential to benefit children in the USA. These awards provide funding to individual researchers in the U.S. for three years, at $100,000 direct cost per year.

Projects should represent early-stage biomedical research that has not yet qualified for significant outside funding, including those not yet submitted for funding consideration. The Foundation is looking for research projects that are early-stage, innovative and cutting-edge, and will only consider funding those proposals that reflect relevance in terms of potential benefit to children in the US.

In selecting awardees, The Hartwell Foundation takes into account the transformative nature of the proposed innovation, the extent to which a strategic or translational approach might accelerate the clinical application of research results to benefit children, the extent of collaboration in the proposed research, the institutional commitment to provide encouragement and technical support to the investigator, and the extent to which funding the investigator will make a difference.

Applicants must be available to interview with the internal selection committee on July 10 and to travel to meet with representatives of the Foundation in November. They also must commit to attend the Foundation's Annual Meeting, which is held annually in September.

Number of Applications Allowed: Two anticipated

Amount of Funding: $300,000 ($100,000 per year for three years)
